New Zealand Post

Welcome to New Zealand Post Depot, Auckland.

A commercial fit-out for New Zealand Post's head office in central Auckland, set within a heritage building, brought back into working life. The brief called for bench seating throughout the atrium - pieces that would sit comfortably alongside the existing architecture, the stained-glass skylight domes below, and the new white steel balustrades the design team had introduced.

We worked from the designer's drawings through to installation, engineering each bench to the curves of the floor plan and the radii of the surrounding balustrades.

Bench seating that worked at scale. The atrium runs across multiple sit-down points: long sweeping runs against the heritage brick, semi-circular pieces fitted to the balustrade rings, and full circular benches wrapping the stained-glass dome openings in the floor. Each piece had to follow the architecture exactly, take heavy daily use from staff and visitors, and read as one considered family rather than a set of one-offs.

What we made

A suite of bespoke bench seating, made-to-order in the Avondale workshop:

Cushions were made to template - sectional, joined cleanly, and shaped so the seam lines follow the curve of the timber base.

  • Long curved wall benches running against the heritage brick, with reeded timber fronts and upholstered seat tops.

  • Semi-circular benches fitted to the inner radii of the balustrades, scaled to site dimensions.

  • Full-circle benches wrapping the stained-glass dome skylights, built in segments and joined on site.

  • Short return seats at junctions and corners, sized to the floor plan and the flow of foot traffic.
